Garden City movement

The english "Garden City" movement was started by Ebenezer Howard in 1898. Garden cities were to be planned, self-contained, "human scale" sub-urban communities of limited size, surrounded by green belts, containing carefully balanced areas of residences, industry and agriculture. Similar ideas were put forward by Peter Kropotkin in his book, "Fields, factories and workshops". Garden cities can be seen as the forerunners to modern planned ecological settlements such as ecovillages. The planning ideas of Permaculture take these ideas even further.
