What is IC Wiki
The IC Wiki is a place for people to share information relating to Intentional Communities and creating a sense of community in ones life as well as information of value to those seeking or living in community.
Any registered user of the ic.org site can add or edit pages on the IC Wiki. We hope that the communities movement can benefit from our shared experience and knowledge.
What IC Wiki is Not
The IC Wiki is NOT the Right Place to:
- Advertise or sell your products... see our Classified Ads
- Give feedback on specific communities. We are creating a system for doing that on our Communities Directory.
- Please DO add your positive or negative feedback about communities to the directory.
- Describe or promote your community or idea for a community.
- To do this see our two heavily used Communities Directory and our Reach Book or see Promote Your Community for more help on getting the word out.
- There is, admittedly, some gray area between sharing personal stories which include some information on your community and this policy. Please consider your motivation - is it to share information on the broader concepts involved, or is it about you or your community? Use good judgment and your articles are less likely to be deleted by others who are helping us all follow these carefully considered policies.
Except... for Content You Add to Your User Page
User Pages are the sole exception to the above... you can promote your products, give feedback on specific communities, or describe or promote yourself or community or ideas on your own User Page... create this page by clicking on your name (which appears at the top of the 'white space' when you logged in)...
However, by extension, you may not promote your User Page elsewhere in the wiki.
ICWiki should contain material that is directly relevant to communities and/or explains clearly how the topic is relevant to communities. For topics with a broader interest than communities we suggest an explanation of how this relates to ICs and then links to other sites with information (rather than trying to include it all here). For an example see Permaculture.
We discourage pages on topics that are only tangentially related to community. It is, of course, difficult to know where to draw the line. Permaculture seems like a good match. Articles on "Sound proofing" community buildings or "how to cook for large groups" still seem relevant if its made clear how they relate. Articles on "how to hang drywall" or specific gardening techniques might do better on a Construction Wiki and a Gardening Wiki respectively.
You will need to login to wiki.ic.org to be able to edit pages. If you have a log in at www.ic.org you can use that same username and password to log in by going to Log In. If you do not yet have a username at www.ic.org you can register here
Once you have logged in you can create or edit pages using the standard Media Wiki techniques described here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Contents#For_editors. For more info see our Help page.
We encourage people to write in a neutral unbiased style. Please be cautious in self-promotion or in writing about yourself (excepting on your User:username page where you can feel free to promote yourself). In such cases, try to write as if you were an more impartial person such as a journalist or encyclopedia offer. When you are including matters of opinion try to indicate them as such (eg "Some people feel that...").
We invite people to share stories and personal experiences as long as they are indicated as such. Please feel free to exercise your judgment and add existing articles which you see as containing significant personal stories to the category Category:Personal stories.
We discourage the promoting of one set of ideals over another and prefer ICWiki be open to and embracing of all types of community.
It is OK to express opinions after conveying an even-handed portrayal of a topic (example: "C Corporations are a type of legal structure that.... C Corps are not generally a good choice for communities wishing to incorporate."). Of course someone else may come and edit that text if they have a different opinion. In such cases, please try to share all sides of an issue as that will best serve our readers. If you do hold a strong opinion about what is TRUE (with a capital T), this may not the best place to share that opinion. There are other online forums where provocative opinion is more welcome - please don't use your beliefs to troll for controversy here.
If you can please do provide references for quotes or other factual information. For help on creating references see Guide for Footnotes.
- Name pages with lower-case letters on all words except the first character. The only exception to this is names of persons and places etc. which you would also capitalize in the middle of a sentence. The first character has, due to software limitations, to be capitalized.
- Make sure that the page-name fully identifies the content. For example don't name a page on how to start a 501c3 "501c3". Instead call it something like "How to start a 501c3 non-profit". You can still link to it with a shorter link-title by using a piped link like this: [[How to start a 501c3 non-profit| 501c3]]
- Do not start page titles with The. For example The Communities Directory would be "Communities Directory".
IC Wiki Structure
To start we encourage fitting content within the existing categories in our navbar to the left or in sub categories thereof. You can add a page to a category by adding a tag such as [Category:Types_of_community] to the bottom of a page. Feel free to create subcategories of these main categories if there are a number of pages that might fit in that subcategory. To suggest changes in our navbar or category structure do so in the discussion for this page. For a list of Categories see: Special:Categories
Category pages should not contain a lot of content. They can contain a link to a main article for that category (for example see Category:Cohousing) and maybe a sentence that describes the category. A few key See Also or External Links are allowed. New Categories should be placed in other categories as that is relevant or in the Category:Categories if no other makes sense.
Using Discussion Pages (aka Talk)
You will notice that at the top every page, there is a discussion tab, as well as the page's main article or category tab (the unique page you are currently reading page is actually the IC wiki's "project page" - a special case of an article page). The discussion page supports conversations about the contents of its page. These pages are generally used to leave messages for other page editors... though, anyone can read them. Suppose you make a change on a page that you are unsure about, and want to find out how others feel about it... you could add a note to the discussion page and invite some dialog about how best to deal with the topic. Or you could use the discussion page to leave a note that you plan to make a major revision to the page by some date.
A short-cut which is particularly handy in discussions is to enter 4 tilde characters "~~~~" - when you save, the wiki engine will replace with the tildes with your name & a date/time stamp. For example, here's what appears when I enter the four tildes: Craigragland 18:19, June 16, 2007 (CDT) (if you click on my name, you'll see my User Page).
Oversight and Moderation
The FIC Reserves the right to moderate the content of wiki.ic.org and to remove inappropriate material at its discretion.
Our goal is to allow a free flow of information and we encourage wiki users to resolve conflicts and cooperate on editing pages.
If conflicts are not resolved IC Wiki administrators have authority to intervene. Further oversight is offered by the FIC's Editorial Review Board and the FIC Board of Directors.
